Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Ready for take-off? Heading for a climate-friendly future with Sustainable Aviation Fuel
With the innovative aviation fuel known as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), we’re driving the transition to a climate-friendly future. Through co-processing waste food oil from around the region, we are able to cut CO2 emissions by more than 80% compared to conventional kerosene products. This makes SAF a key contributor to the industry's transition to more sustainable air travel.
Innovation and forward-looking technologies are the key to reducing greenhouse gases and meeting climate targets and the aviation industry has an important role to play in this. It accounts for some 2.8 % of total global CO2 emissions worldwide and needs to reduce its footprint to achieve its goal of becoming CO2 neutral by 2050. How can this be achieved? The answer: By using Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF, an umbrella term for jet fuel produced without the use of fossil fuels. In other words, SAF is a genuine alternative, and it is already being used today. At the OMV refinery in Schwechat we produce it from used cooking oil.
Our Strategy 2030 for sustainable aviation fuel
OMV is aiming to become a leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel in Europe. Starting with initial production volumes in 2022, capacity is set to increase to up to 700,000 tons of SAF by 2030. In addition, OMV is continuously expanding its SAF supply partnerships with leading airlines. The newly developed SAF Business Solutions are tailored to support companies in achieving their targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air travel and the air transport of goods.
What are the benefits of Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Depending on the method and raw materials used to produce it, SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% and more compared to standard jet fuel. Unlike CO2 offsetting, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel prevents any new CO2 emissions and reduces them directly at the source.
What precisely is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is very similar to conventional jet fuel in its chemical composition, but is instead produced from sustainable raw materials. The first quantities of sustainable jet fuel at the OMV Schwechat refinery are being made by incorporating regional used cooking oil into the fuel production process. This makes the entire production chain as regional and environmentally friendly as possible. Compared to conventional fuel, our sustainable product makes a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions by more than 80 % over the entire life cycle.
Our promise to our partners
OMV produces Sustainable Aviation Fuel with the environment and our customers in mind: We take our responsibility as a fuel supplier and our commitment to reducing our CO2 emissions very seriously. At the same time, we deliver on our customer promise of being the preferred supplier to airlines in the regions we operate in. Based on the strategic outlook for the aviation sector, we regard Sustainable Aviation Fuel as an important addition to our jet fuel range. We are working hard every day on reducing our own carbon footprint and on helping our customers reduce theirs.
