OMV in Libya

A long-term partnership

OMV has been present in Libya since 1975 and since then it has undergone continuous growth. OMV’s success in Libya is based on the acquisition of producing assets, exploration, as well as field developments and redevelopments.

OMV has been exploring in most sedimentary basins on- and offshore Libya; including Sirte, Murzuq, Ghadames, Cyrenaica, Kufra and Pelagian basins.

OMV has stakes on large oil fields in the Libyan desert which are operated by local operators i.e. Zueitina and AGOCO in the Sirte basin and AOO in the Murzuq basin.

Since 2011, civil unrest, protests and especially blockages of pipelines and oil terminals have repeatedly led to interruptions of OMV activities in Libya.

In 2022 political and security situation improved and Q4 production reached a net to OMV production of about 33 kboed/d.

Sirte basin

OMV operated exploration drilling preparation has been continued and spud of the first exploration well is scheduled for 2023. Development drilling and workover campaign in Nafoora has been restarted and mechanical and electrical tie-in of projects is ongoing. The installation and construction work for the new power generation system is in progress.

Murzuq basin

Continued infill drilling of development wells in El Sharara field with three rigs.
18-inch trunk line (TL) replacement project (32 km) has been completed, both fields D and B in NC186 back online.

Community relations and development

We believe that community engagement is an important aspect for the long-term success of our business and for the well-being of communities around our business operations.
We actively support local communities and provided them better access to quality health and education facilities. Furthermore, OMV as part of the El Sharara JV contributes in social development program with a focus on water supply, health services, youth development, etc. being executed for neighboring communities around El Sharara operations.
In response to COVID- 19 pandemic, OMV also provided support to local communities in recent years.
