OMV secures long-term supply of 67 GWh green electricity per year
- VERBUND and ImWind will supply OMV with sustainable electricity comprising 65% hydropower and 35% wind
- These partnerships for renewable energy enable OMV to cover over 35% of the external energy requirements at the Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline
- Savings of 11,000 tons of Scope 2 emissions per year for both facilities
Vienna, October 29, 2024 – OMV concludes power purchase agreements (PPAs), with VERBUND and ImWind and secures an annual purchase of 67 GWh of sustainable electricity. This volume corresponds to the annual power consumption of around 16,000 households1. With this supply of green energy, OMV will be able to cover over 35 percent of the external electricity requirements of the Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline (AWP). This enables OMV to reduce its carbon footprint and accelerate the use of renewable energy sources.
The sustainable power obtained by OMV comes from renewable energy sources and comprises 65 percent hydropower and 35 percent wind energy, which will help OMV save around 11,000 tons of CO2 per year and a total of around 60,300 tons for the term of the agreements. It will lead to a significant reduction of the Scope 2 emissions from the Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline.
“Our collaborations with VERBUND and ImWind will contribute to the reliable and sustainable energy supply to our facilities. We are advancing our ambitious decarbonization targets in our Strategy 2030. The partnerships for renewable energy play an important role in supporting the transition towards a low-carbon future and we will continue to expand our portfolio of PPAs,” says Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV AG.
VERBUND is Austria’s leading electricity company and will provide OMV with 44 GWh of electricity obtained from hydropower annually for four years starting in January 2025. OMV’s agreement with ImWind, an Austrian wind power and photovoltaics pioneer, will last for eight years and ensures an annual capacity of 23.5 GWh derived from wind power. The supply is due to start in November 2024.
1 Based on E-Control (2022), consumption of 4,200 KWh/year for a three-person household.
